Hungarian
Roebuck Hunt
April 2004
By Peter Lewis Horn II
Our groups of 9 hunters were on
hand for opening day of the Roebuck season in Eastern
Hungary, a tradition that is in its 20th year.
We have worked for many years to be able to maintain
the hunting rights over what many people consider
to be the best Roebuck hunting in the world. Our group of hunters came from the United States, France, Switzerland and Belgium.
Last year one member of our opening week hunt took the heaviest Roebuck in Hungary (758 grams) for all of 2003.

The first night the hunters were coming back with trophy after trophy that qualified for both the CIC and SCI measurement systems. I kept thinking “what a day!” we had taken all the top trophies and everyday more just kept coming in. Out of 67 trophies 46 qualified for CIC medals (11 gold medals). It is not unusual to see 150 to 200 Roebucks before you see a single 14karat trophy. It was like being out on a Whitetail Hunt and seeing 150 to 160 point deer every time you looked around.
A big Roebuck is anything over 500 grams (weight of horns and skull). We took three over 600 grams. Just 15 miles away in an area we hunt birds in, they took a buck of 810 grams, which I am sure will be the world largest for 2004.
I have been lucky enough to hunt Roebuck in Scotland, England, Czech Republic, Romania, Germany, and Spain, and can say with a certain amount of authority, that Hungary has no equal as to the quality and quantity of trophy heads. Hungary’s Stag, Boar (new world record was taken in Hungary this year), and Fallow Deer are also found in great numbers, with trophies that always are among the best in all of Europe.
After eighteen years of watching how Hungary deals with its wildlife it is easy to see how she maintains such trophy quality. We do a hunt every year on April 15 th for the opening day. We have groups until May 15 th then in July for “The Rut”. You may even have a chance for a Roebuck hunt during fall Stag hunt.
If you really want a chance to take a top trophy or you just want several representative heads, we will be most happy to have you along.
